How to help yourself grieve

As promised I’m back with another blog and I’ll be digging deeper into how we can help ourselves to process grief. So if you want to know how to help yourself grieve then read on.

Grounding exercises

In my last blog I mentioned grounding techniques. Here I’m going to bring you one of my favourites…

Let’s begin

  1. Start by stepping outside of the house with no socks on. Get back in touch with the earth. You can stand on concrete, dirt, grass or whatever you like but take a moment to really feel connected.

  2. Close your mind to negativity and focus on the present. Breathe slowly and think about each breath as you allow yourself to relax deeper into the ground.

  3. Feel the weight drop through your heels, and imagine yourself rooted to the ground like a tree.

  4. Feel the tension inside your body begin to drain into the earth below and continue to breathe meaningful deep and relaxing breaths.

  5. Stay in the moment. Once you’ve identified three different sounds you can focus on other senses such as touch, what three things can you feel? Perhaps the softness of your hair, perhaps the cool wet rain drops or perhaps the icy chill on your neck.

  6. As this begins to feel relaxing, start trying it once each day, even for just a few minutes, as you introduce it to your day you’ll naturally begin to expand on your senses.

I also promise that in time this will really help you to manage feelings of overwhelm. When things get too much for me, I tune in to some grounding techniques and it really helps to reset my priorities and regroup.

So there you have it, one way to help yourself grieve. if you feel you’d benefit from more tips on how to help yourself grieve then check back later this week for more suggestions.
